National Defense Education Act

This was the beginning of the federal government’s entrance into education by establishing the legitimacy of federal funding of higher education. It was a reaction to Sputnik and meant to assure solid mathematics and science education in our schools so that the U.S. could compete globally. The implications for language policy are the government’s oversight and reach into public education has been established, allowing them to make mandates that affect schooling across the nation.
